I spent the other night with my guy, Eddie, on his boat.  Right before bedtime, he decided to pour almost an entire jug of Fabuloso liquid cleanser down into one of hatches because I said I smelled something a little unpleasant. Bless his heart, he meant well, but within seconds, my lips and tongue went numb and I could feel my throat beginning to close. I knew I was having an allergic reaction to the cleanser. Of course, the smart thing to do in a situation like that is get out into the fresh air, but I’d just taken off all my clothes. I quickly drank some water, took a few breaths through my nose, told him I was having an allergic reaction and remained calm. That wasn’t easy because a vision of Eddie doing an emergency tracheotomy with a pen flashed through my mind. I am pretty sure he doesn’t know how to do a tracheotomy and I certainly didn’t want him to learn how on me! Thankfully, within a few minutes, my symptoms began to subside and I was fine. THAT TIME!

Over the past few months, I’ve been replacing the types of cleaning products I used around my home with more natural ones. Eddie, unfortunately does not completely share my convictions and loves that Fabuloso stuff.  I’ve noticed what I’ve been using lately, cleansers made with essential oils,  work much better than any other products I’ve tried.  Of course, I breathed in a ridiculously large amount of that Fabuloso cleanser and it caused an allergic reaction, but how many of us use those kinds of products on a regular basis to clean our homes? They might clean well and smell good, but are they adversely affecting our health and wellness over time, even in much smaller amounts? Could a quick spray here and there actually trigger the allergies, headaches and other symptoms we are experiencing and we don’t even realize? After what happened to me the other night, I’m even more convinced that using natural cleaning products around my house is the best and safest choice for my health and wellness and also for my family and even my pets.

If you go to the store to look for more natural cleaning products, you’ll probably notice they are much more expensive than the ones you usually buy. Keeping your home clean and germ-free can end up costing you a small fortune. But, not if you make your own. And making your own products is pretty easy. All you need is a glass spray bottle, white vinegar, water and a few drops of essential oil. I make mine with Eucalyptus, Peppermint, and Wild Orange essential oils. It smells amazing. Better than anything you can possibly buy and does a fantastic job at cleaning just about any surface.

Eucalyptus naturally cleans surfaces and the air. It can also help promote feelings of relaxation and clear breathing.

Peppermint is refreshing and minty and promotes healthy respiratory function and clear breathing. It’s also a natural bug repellent.

Wild Orange is a powerful cleanser and purifying agent and it smells absolutely delicious. It can help to energize and uplift you while purifying the air.

Here’s how to make the household cleanser I use:

True health and wellness isn’t just about eating well and choosing the best foods and ingredients available. That’s where it starts, but it doesn’t end there. We often forget that some of the products we’re using are just as bad for us as eating unhealthy foods. Our skin care, personal hygiene items, perfumes, and even our makeup could contain potentially harmful ingredients. And some of the products we use in our homes to keep it fresh, clean and germ-free, could actually be harming us.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing more about natural alternatives to some of the products you currently use and hopefully you will give them a try. It won’t be easy to make the switch because, like me, you’ve probably been using certain products for years. Maybe some of the same products your grandmother or mom used and it’s really tough to let them go. It’s really difficult to make every single thing  you use all natural, but you will notice that the natural ones actually work better. And you’ll have peace of mind in knowing you’re using safer ingredients that are contributing to a happier, healthier body, mind and spirit. And a happier, healthier environment for you and your loved ones.

Yours in happiness, health and success,
